Chapter 2: The Meaning Behind Our Logo

We intentionally chose Everett's name for our foundation because we wanted people who searched for him to discover what his life stood for, rather than be defined by the circumstances of how his life ended.

The color green was selected because it was one of Everett's favorite colors. It is also closely associated with nature and conveys a sense of calm, balance, and growth.

The bird is the most significant element of our logo. Everett had a colorful Western Meadowlark tattoo on his forearm, a tribute to Ashleigh's birthplace, Kansas, where the Western Meadowlark is the state bird.  He was also an avid birder, a passion that led him to participate in the World Series of Birding in and around Cape May, New Jersey. This annual competition challenges teams to identify as many bird species as possible by sight or sound within a 24-hour period. Everett's team consistently ranked among the top teams in his age group.

This unique interest reflected Everett's curiosity, enthusiasm for learning, and appreciation for the world around him. The bird in flight symbolizes those qualities, representing openness, exploration, possibility, and forward momentum.

The bird in our logo also symbolizes the potential that exists when young people are given the freedom, support, and space to thrive. Through our partnerships with organizations that provide positive pathways and places of belonging, we are helping that potential take flight.

Since our founding, EBF has invested $37,500 across 5 organizations. Together these organizations have served more than 2,000 young people throughout the city of Philadelphia creating opportunities for connection, growth and belonging. 

The Story Behind The Story

That spirit of curiosity is reflected in the meadowlark featured in our logo. It is one of the things we miss most about Everett and it is that value that guides our work today. Building a foundation in the midst of profound loss is no easy task. Every aspect of the process was unfamiliar, requiring us to learn as we went and lean into vulnerability. Two years later, we can look back and see how much we have grown. We have evolved into a foundation with a clear mission, meaningful partnerships, and a growing impact in the community. While we know there is still much to learn and many opportunities ahead, we are encouraged by how far we've come and are optimistic about what the future holds. We remain committed to growing thoughtfully, deepening our impact, and creating more opportunities for young people to find connection, belonging, and a positive path forward.
